How Do You Use the Mooncup?

mooncup instructions on how to use

  • Find a comfortable sitting, standing, squatting or kneeling position. Relax and take your time.
  • Press the sides of the Mooncup menstrual cup together and then fold in half again.
  • Hold the folded sides firmly together between thumb and forefinger of one hand. The single curved edge should be away from your palm.
  • Stay relaxed. With your free hand gently separate the labia and push the curved edge of the folded Mooncup menstrual cup up into the vagina.
  • Insert the Mooncup menstrual cup fully following the natural angle of your vagina. Aim towards the small of your back, not the top of your head. You do not need to push the Mooncup menstrual cup up high into the vagina, the vaginal muscle will keep it in place.
  • Once the Mooncup menstrual cup is fully inserted grasp the base of the cup, not the stem, and rotate it once to ensure that it has fully unfolded.

Most women find that the stem is too long. You will need to remove the Mooncup menstrual cup and cut the stem to your own requirements.

It is important to keep your Mooncup clean. Wash it regularly with mild soap and hot water. It can be cleaned more thoroughly between periods.

What if We SHOW You How Easy It Is?

No, don't worry - this is NOT a graphic video. You don't need to have finished eating! Just a very simple demonstration of how the Mooncup works.

Which Size

The Mooncup is available in two sizes.

Size A measures 46mm in diameter and 50mm in length.

Size B measures 43 mm in diameter and 50mm in length.

Both sizes have a pull stem 21mm long, which you can trim to the length that is right for you.

Size A is recommended for women who have given birth vaginally or who have had a caesarean section and are aged 30 or above.

Size B is recommended for women who have not given birth or who have had a caesarean section and are aged below 30.

Please ensure that you select the correct size. For hygiene reasons we cannot exchange Mooncups once they have been dispatched.

Success Stories/Testimonials taken from TimesOnline

After years of seeing the mooncup sticker in public toilets,I finally went and bought one last week. One of the best purchases I've ever made! It's far more comfortable than tampons or pads, you can wear it longer, and not even a hint of a leak! Much less messy than tampons as well.

Jenny, Exeter,

I had one years ago, and when I needed to replace it couldn't find another one... Now I have one again and I must say it's as brilliant as I remember. I cycle for my commute to work and it was absolute bliss not to worry about pads and tampons and leaking. Mooncup rules!

Kat, New Malden,

I have just started using one and wish I'd discovered it years ago. I now have an uninterrupted night's sleep, and don't have to keep checking for leaks. I use a disabled toilet when i'm out; they have sinks in them to wash hands before and wash mooncup and hands afterwards. cheaper to buy online

Rose, Northampton,

I've had my mooncup for about a year now. My mum had one first and when she told me about I thought it sounded disgusting but now I have my own my view has totally changed. Admittedly I don't use it all of the time because I find it a bit awkward to clean it when I'm out and about, but it is great!

Lauren, Walsall,

I've been using a mooncup for nearly three years and find it to be the best thing I have ever discovered. It has saved me loads of money and is ecologically friendly. More women should give it a try they will be surprised at its efficiency and how comfortable and dependable it is!

Carol, tranent, scotland

I have been using the moon cup for 6yrs or more and I think its the best thing ever and try to pass the info on as much as possible

H Tudball, Truro, G.B

I tried my Mooncup for the first time yesterday. I was sure it was going to be tricky / messy / awkward but it was not. I'm totally stunned at how simple the whole thing is. I've had no leaks, no pain ( I did trim the stem) and am already totally converted. YIPPEE - no more tampons and pads!!

Wish I'd discovered Mooncup years ago!

I stumbled across Mooncup and ordered one for myself immediately. I really don't understand why women have reservations about trying a Mooncup - washing it out is much less unpleasant than disposing of other methods of sanitary protection.

I have now been using my mooncup for several years and only wish I had found this product earlier - it's so much more hygenic than towels and tampons and really easy to use. I recommend it to all my friends - no tampons to buy, store or dispose of and it's a very small, discreet item to have in your handbag or holiday luggage. I would have saved myself a lot of trouble and money had I discovered Mooncup earlier!

Bought for me as a Joke.... but I love it!

A local girl came to talk to us all at Church and we giggled and went Urrgh! at the thought of the funny plastic egg cup :-) I was the only one that said I'd give it a go, so a friend thought she'd buy me one for a laugh! The joke was on her when she asked how much they were. ha ha. But that was 8 years ago and I've used it every month since. I love it! No accidents. No mess. No tampons/towels. No trouble and NO MONEY. Go on....treat yourself...it'll be the best thing you ever buy.

Every woman should have one!

I have had a Mooncup now for five years. It is the best thing I have ever used. Clean, comfortable, good value for money and easy too use. It's also much more environmentally friendly than putting used tampons and towels into our waterways!

After five years mine is ready to be replaced.

On first sight and description of the Mooncup, I said, "Count me out on that one thanks!" But then I looked into it a bit more and thought I would give it a go. The thought of toxic shock etc. has always scared me a bit and I can be a bit forgetful so something that doesn't have this risk might be good.

My full blurb is below but as a brief summary, I would say that it is a brilliant product, easy to use (for me) day and night and I never need buy another tampon for the next 10 years! No leakage, no spillage and no messy wrappers, etc.

Detail: I am a thirty something with two kids (hatched naturally).
My mooncup arrived in nice packaging and a little storage bag. I read the instructions that came with it - all seemed straight forward. I wet the cup, held it in one hand and folded with my finger as shown then popped it in. I didn't cut the long nozzle off at first as I was afraid I would never see the thing again!

The cup didn't feel at all uncomfortable but the nozzle poked me a bit, so after I had taken it out a couple of times, I cut the nozzle down to just less than a centimetre. It was fine after that.

I was so happy with it after my first day that I decided I would try sleeping with it in. No problems through the night but when I got up in the morning my fingers weren't working very well and I ended up pushing it up a bit rather than pulling it down! I then had visions of having to go off to the hospital for an extraction!

However, I was panicking over nothing as when I woke up properly I was able to retrieve it with a pinch between my finger and thumb! The thing to remember is that it is not fragile as such, it is rubber and you can always get a grip on it. I slept with it in the following night and didn't have any problems in the morning.

I guess the main thing I came to realise with my mooncup is that rather going eeeuww, it is actually less eeeuww in my opinion than tampons and pads and you feel much cleaner and fresher. It is also ideal for homes with septic tanks etc. as in my case as there is nothing to throw away.

My friend has now ordered one of these also, so I hope she loves it too.

I am happy to answer any questions/concerns via the helpdesk regarding the mooncup.

Ask a Question

Question: I have used a Mooncup for several years and think it is fantastic, only wish I had discovered it earlier! Can you tell me if it would be suitable for my daughter who is 12 and only just started her periods.
Our Answer:

Hello, this is a very good question, and we have checked with the manufacturers for their take on it:
"The size B-smaller Mooncup is technically designed for young girls to use, even when they first start their periods. Many young girls are now using the Mooncup! Use of the smaller Mooncup will depend on the girls' emotional maturity and knowledge about her body. If the young girl, or her parents/culture have strong personal feelings about keeping the hymen "intact," she should not use the Mooncup."
However, we would add that there are positive and negatives to using a Mooncup so young. On the plus side, there is no embarrassment to using a Mooncup, as your daughter can insert the Mooncup in the morning and then not have to change a tampon or towel during the day, and can even go swimming in it. On the negative side, it may be easy for your daughter to panic about how far it is inserted, is it in correctly - so it could lead to embarrassment if she has to call on Mum to help out! Tampons and towels are also undoubtedly less intimidating than the Mooncup to first time users ... so, the choice depends on how open and frank you are with your daughter, and how sensible a 12 year old she is. Many thanks, Richard

Question: Hi,

I would like to try the mooncup but am unsure which size to buy. I'm 34yrs old and have never had children. Can you help please?
Thanks
Our Answer:

Hello, normally, you would fit into Size A, as the Mooncup sizing is based on the the pelvic floor tone, which naturally decreases over time, especially after childbirth. However, if you have experienced any issues with your pelvic floor (such as minor incontinence) then it would be a Size B that would fit.
