What is a Bodyclock Starter 30?
The Bodyclock Starter 30 has been designed and developed by Lumie, a British company based in Cambridge who have been in the SAD business for nearly 20 years.
They pioneered the concept of integrated dawn simulators in the early 90s.
The Bodyclock Starter 30 is designed to reset your bodyclock in the darker winter months.
Oversleeping is a common problem which means that you are likely to wake up groggy.
The gradual increase in light prompts biological responses which make you feel more energetic and alert upon wakening
By using a Bodyclock Starter 30, a dawn simulator, light steadily increases to a maximum during the last half an hour of being asleep. This will help to reduce the feelings of lethargy and 'sleep inertia', and will gradually wake you up as well as help to reset your bodyclock.
In the event that you need to wake up earlier than normal you can use the Bodyclock Starter 30 as a dawn simulator and shift your body clock accordingly.
The optional sunset allows you to unwind at night.
So you can gauge the size of the Lumie Bodyclocks, take a look at this image.
This is the Starter 30 version, so you can see that they easily fit onto a bedside table and can be used as an effective reading lamp.
What is SAD?
With each new season, there comes a change in our metabolism, mood and behaviour. Animals, unlike humans, adapt to these changes efficiently: hibernating in winter; hunting more in summer. Many people find that their sleep becomes disturbed during the longer winter months. They require more sleep, tend to eat more and dislike the shorter days. It's common to refer to this state of mind as the 'winter blues'. Unfortunately, though, some people suffer these symptoms quite profoundly and are said to be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD for short.
How Can SAD affect Me?
Around the beginning of autumn until mid-spring, SAD sufferers will experience some, if not all, of the following symptoms:
- Sleep disturbances - sleeping more, but waking unrefreshed. Difficulty getting out of bed and craving a nap in the afternoon.
- Propensity to overeat - SAD sufferers tend to crave carbohydrates which, due to their lethargy, they do not burn off and thus gain weight.
- Depression, despair, anxiety and stress
- Tiredness and lethargy - even the simplest tasks seem like too much effort
- Physical aches and pains in the joints
- Personal issues - avoidance of company, loss of libido and irritability
- Behavioural problems - particularly noticed in younger people
- Lowered immune system
