The unit offers two treatment modes:

How Does Rio Laser Scanning System Work?

rio scanning laser system bikini lineLaser hair removal works by sending a laser beam to the hair follicle with enough energy to destroy the root, without it affecting the surrounding area. As with all laser systems, several treatments are required to completely clear an area of unwanted hair.

Lasers deliver an intense beam of light which are made up of a single wavelength or colour. Skin is essentially transparent to light in the wavelength range of 600 - 1100nm (nano meters), while melanin containing structures will absorb laser energy of this wavelength. It is therefore possible to target the hair follicle which has a concentration of melanin without affecting the surrounding area.

The light energy absorbed by the melanin pigment results in the rapid heating up of the hair follicle. This heat destroys the cells (papilla) responsible for hair growth. If adequate heating is achieved, then the follicle is permanently disabled resulting in a permanent reduction in hair growth.


Skin Types & Hair Types

Using a light wavelength of 808nm enables treatment of relatively dark skin as well as fair-skinned types. However, laser hair treatment is not suitable for Afro Caribbean or black skin complexions. How Long Does It Take?

Laser hair reduction is generally considered to be effective after 6 treatments. This varies from person to person and depends on the area you are treating, hair density, your hair's growth cycle and colour. Dark hair on fair skin responds to laser therapy best, but both dark and fair hair may take several treatments for long-term results. Some individuals require more, some fewer treatments to achieve satisfaction.

Initially with each treatment you will notice a gradual thinning/reduction of hair growth in the treated area. Women who suffer excessive hair growth due to male type hormones are likely to require long term maintenance.

Works well and is easy to use....

Works well and is easy to use. The unit is well made and looks good too. The only problem I have is how long it takes to treat say a leg - I've ended up spending simply 10-15 minutes each session (about 3 a week) doing this and, after about 3 months, have finally treated both legs to the point the hairs are not coming back.

So, in summary, works well, but takes a while to carry out the treatment. Why couldn't they have made the treatment head bigger? I suppose it would be an industrial and maybe dangerous product if they did!

Hello, the only restriction really is that it should not be used on the eyes (for eyelashes etc.) so a degree of common sense is all that is required. It can be used around the eyebrows, but that is as close as we would recommend. Many thanks

It can be used on all parts of the body that have hair. There is no restriction other than common sense. So, do not shine the laser into your eyes for example to try and remove eyelashes! Other than that, you can remove any hair on your body with this device when used properly. Thanks

Question: I have just been refused laser treatment at a clinic due to the fact I'm on medication for my blood pressure.. Am I able to use the Rio salon laser??

Hi, we are not aware of any problems at all using the Rio when on medication. We have checked with the manuals etc and it's not mentioned in there either. We will ask the manufacturers of course to check and let you know if there is a problem but we really doubt it otherwise they would have mentioned this in their user manual. Kind regards

It all depends on how many times you have used it for a particular area and whether you have actually managed to catch the hair at the right time in it's life cycle. Hi, it's to do with melanin in the epidermis. Whilst it is suitable for relatively dark skin types it's not suitable for Afro Caribbean or black skin complexions. It really depends on how dark your skin is. It's not that there are side effects on really dark complexions it's just not that effective. Thanks

Question: How long does it take for the hair to fall out after you have treated it and how do I know if it has worked?

Hi, it doesn't really work like that to be honest. What happens is that the hair has 3 stages of growth: rest, shed and growth. You need to 'catch' the hair when you treat it in the right phase. So, it may take upto 3 treatment, or it may take 1 treatment to kill the hair. You fill find it falls away within a few days or you may find it gradually thins/reduces over each treatment. That's why we say allow 3 treatments or even a few more before the treated area is totally free of hair. I hope this helps! Thanks

Yes you can assuming that the hairs you wish to treat are not grey and your skin tone is suitable for such treatment. As usual it is always advisable to try on a test area first to make sure your skin will tolerate it. You should wait 24 hours to ensure you don't get a rash (though we have never seen or had this reported this is what the manufacturers suggest).

Hi, no it doesn't sorry. It comes with the usual manufacturers warranty of a year. The normal legal 30 day distance-selling-act regulations where you have 30 days to try a product out in your home does not apply either, due to hygiene reasons as this kind of product is often used in areas where hygiene is an issue.
