What is DermaSilk Intimo?

DermaSilk is manufactured from pure fibroin - the inert part of silk - which has a similar protein make up to hair.

Importantly for sensitive skin or eczema sufferers, it does not contain Sericin - a substance that is present in silk that can result in allergic reactions.

There are also no dyes or other substances in the fabric that will irritate the skin or delicate tissues called mucosa that come into contact with the fabric.

Antimicrobial Protection

Many fabrics provide an ideal breeding ground for harmful and irritating micro-organisms, especially when used in clothing around intimate areas. The combination of body warmth and moisture naturally results in a high concentration of these organisms under the arms and in the crotch of underwear.

To combat this, some garment manufacturers apply antimicrobial coatings to their clothes. However, commonly used antimicrobials - such as triclosan and ionic silver - are not always appropriate for people with sensitive skin or eczema, as the coatings release chemical substances that may be absorbed by the skin and cause irritation or discomfort.

DermaSilk has an antiomicrobial permanently bonded to it, which unlike other antimicrobials, is designed to stay just on the garment and not transfer to the skin. The antimicrobial inhibits bacterial and fungal growth, but does not affect the natural flora of the skin or the mucosa. It attracts unwanted micro-organisms to it and destroys them instantly.

DermaSilk therefore works in 2 ways to protect your skin:

• DermaSilk fabric cannot harbour micro-organisms so will not allow new bacterial or fungal growth against the skin
• The antimicrobial coating works to render any existing micro-organisms inactive

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

• Treat DermaSilk Intimo garments with care and they will last as long as normal underclothing.
• Wash by hand or in the washing machine at 30°C using non-bio (enzyme-free) detergent.
• DermaSilk is made from animal protein very similar to human hair so it can also be washed by hand with a little neutral shampoo (without conditioner or other additives).
• Do not use bleach, fabric conditioners, stain removers or disinfectants. It is important to rinse repeatedly in plenty of water.
• Do not spin-dry or tumble-dry, or dry in direct contact with sources of heat (radiators).
• To remove any stains, steep the garments in warm water and bicarbonate (2 spoons of bicarbonate per litre at 60°C) for 2-3 hours before ordinary washing.
