Q. I have been interested in trying this but the things that stop me is I take Percoet for pain and don't know if that could be a problem mixing it while taking 5htp. The other concern is I like my caffeine and sugar and don't think I can stop either one. So do you think it is still safe and would it still be affective if I continue taking my percocet, sugar and caffeine? Also occasionally need valium to help me get through a panic attack. I always get the answer `Ask you doctor' problem is no doctor will tell you it is safe to take alternative medicine so they advise AGAINST the 5-htp.
A. Hi, and we cannot tell you it is safe to take 5-HTP alongside that pain killer and valium - it would be irresponsible of us, sorry! And you are right I'm afraid - all we can do is tell you to ask your GP. However, the known interactions with 5-HTP are mainly other anti-depressants, if the pain killer help increase serotonin levels then that is a bad interaction and any anti-depressant could increase serotonin levels too much if you take alongside 5-HTP.

A. This is a tricky one as some nutritionists say you shouldn't take together and others swear by it for it's combined effects. However, there are products out there that combine them into one pill. Personally, I would check with my Dr who has my full medical history before combining I think.

A. Hi, they are made of gelatin, which is widely used in many products but is animal based. Vegans/Veggies simply break the capsule and mix the contents with yoghurt or orange juice for example if it's an issue. Thanks

A. Hi, we are not aware of any contraindications of Seronex ingredients with HRT. However, I assume the HRT you are using is a prescription drug so as we always say - if you are taking prescription meds you should check with your GP before taking any herbal supplement.

5-HTP should not be taken with antidepressants, weight-control drugs, other serotonin-modifying agents, or substances known to cause liver damage, because in these cases 5-HTP may have excessive effects. People with liver disease may not be able to regulate 5-HTP adequately and those suffering from autoimmune diseases such as scleroderma may be more sensitive than others, to 5-HTP. These people should not take 5-HTP without consulting a knowledgeable healthcare professional. The safety of taking 5-HTP during pregnancy and breast-feeding is not known at this time.

A. Hi, many nutritionalists do say the effectiveness of 5HTP may be increased with gingko biloba, St. John's Wort, B-complex vitamins with magnesium, tyrosine, flax seed oil, and ginger.
